Autumn Walk - Ilkla Moor Baht At

The much delayed ‘Autumn Walk’ took place on Wednesday 4 November 2011. Sadly for several reasons the group was small but it was a happy band of 5 which set off for Ilkley via Blubberhouses.

Arriving at Ilkley we parked near the splendid bridge over the Wharfe and walked up to the railway station where La Stazioni was our immediate destination for coffee.  Splendidly refreshed we adjourned to the ‘bus station only to find that the ‘bus to Heber’s Ghyll had just gone. The top picture on the right shows that despite this set-back, we were of good spirit. Being adaptable (and having little choice) we ascended the steep Wells Road to gain the moor edge and the path to White Wells. The race horse of the party is (just) seen on this path to the said White Wells in the second picture and then the party on arrival in picture 3.

At this point the second error of the day took place. Despite having a plethora of maps and navigational equipment we managed to find the wrong path leading us into quagmire after quagmire with occasional gains of dry ground (picture 5) and finally the proper path at ‘John’s Bridge’ (below).  We then avoided all unsuitable paths and arrived at The Hermit Inn where an excellent lunch was partaken.

After lunch we made the gentle descent to Burley in Wharfdale station for a train back to Ikley (and again to La Stazioni for refreshment before finding the car and a sedate journey home.

A splendid day out!
